The Story Behind Piekenierskloof Wines
Piekenierskloof Wines is more than just a brand; it’s a legacy. The story begins with the Piekeniers, Dutch soldiers who were deployed to explore the plains of the Olifants River region. They fell in love with the lush valley and decided to settle permanently, cultivating the land and developing a small farming community. This is where the story of Piekenierskloof Wines begins.
The van Zyl family, descendants of these original settlers, have been passionately cultivating the rugged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof since 1923. Today, the fourth generation of the van Zyl family celebrates their heritage with unique wines made from meticulously farmed and lovingly managed vines.
The Unique Terroir of Piekenierskloof
The vineyards of Piekenierskloof grow on West- and East-facing slopes on both sides of a valley that winds its way in a North-South direction. Planted in Tafelberg sandstone soils at an altitude of 650m to 700m, the altitude and sandy loam soils give the wines a sense of perfume and minerality. The grapes ripen slowly, developing complex flavours, resulting in wines with predominantly fresh fruit and berry flavours.
Piekenierskloof is synonymous with the Grenache varietal, a vigorous and hardy vine that thrives in hot and dry conditions. The Grenache reaches its pinnacle of quality when the vines reach maturity. This varietal paves the way for Piekenierskloof’s arsenal of iconic Rhône varietals like Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Mourvèdre, and Shiraz.

Our collection of Piekenierskloof Wines offers a variety of tastes and experiences.
